The definition of dependent child has changed from 18 to 21 years of age, effective today. In order to be considered a dependent child, the child needs to be unmarried and not in a common-law relationship. For a child with a physical or mental condition to be considered a dependent, they must have been continually unable to financially support themselves since before turning 22.
The new definition is effective as of October 24, 2017 and will apply to all applications received on or after this date. If the application was received after August 1, 2014 and before October 23, 2017, it will be processed based on the previous definitions of dependent child.
