Recent Changes to the Citizenship Act

The Government of Canada has announced that changes to the Citizenship Act will be effective as of October 11, 2017. The adoption of Bill C-6 will result in a number of significant changes to the current Citizenship Act. Some of the important changes include the following:

– Applicants must now be physically present in Canada for three out of five years before applying for citizenship.

– Applicants must file Canadian income taxes, if required to do so under the Income Tax Act, for three out of five years, matching the new physical presence requirement.

– Applicants between 18 and 54 years old must meet the language and knowledge requirements for citizenship.
